David took over Golden Gate Xpress a few days after the murder of George Floyd in May, 2020. From protests, wildfires, the presidential election, budget cuts, the Israeli–Palestinian conflict on campus and more, the months that followed were historically newsworthy. David spearheaded Xpress’ transition from print to digital content while doubling the amount of daily visitors to the site. David is responsible for introducing virtual events and live social media engagement as a tool to engage with readers during crucial moments and interviews. Our work won national recognition in multiple categories.

SF State plans for 131 layoffs, union president says most in CSU history
SF State administration notified 131 staff members on Tuesday that they would be laid off Nov. 9. The layoff notice is the largest in the history of any campus in the California State University system, according to California State University Employees Union (CSUEU) Chapter 305 President Sandee Noda.

Zoom denies service for controversial panel featuring Leila Khaled
A member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, refugee and the first female plane hijacker was scheduled to give remarks at an event hosted by SF State professors. Zoom sided with protesters at its doorstep by rescinding its services for the event, citing “the speaker’s reported affiliation or membership in a U.S. designated foreign terrorist organization.”

Fires in Sonoma County prompt evacuations and endanger homes
